Botanical Art Series — Cherry Blossom Collection
Created in response to the Sakura Community Art Exhibit at the Japanese Friendship Garden & Museum in Balboa Park, this painting honors the tradition of hanami — the joyful gathering beneath cherry blossoms to celebrate spring’s fleeting beauty and the renewal it brings.
In this hopeful moment, a youthful figure reaches tenderly toward cascading branches of soft peach-pink blossoms. His eyes are closed as he inhales their delicate fragrance, the blooms hovering close as if offering a quiet invitation to begin again. The gesture captures the threshold between stillness and awakening.
His skin and hands are rendered in luminous imitation gold leaf, chosen to evoke an emerging inner light — the warmth that stirs as winter gives way to spring. The gilding shifts subtly throughout the day, allowing the piece to respond to its environment and feel alive within the home.
Behind him, textured oil layers dissolve into rippling water below, grounding the composition in harmony and reflection. The sunrise sky — painted in warm oranges, pinks, and lavenders — mirrors the theme of renewal. Buds are just beginning to open; petals unfurl in their brief, radiant bloom.
Through layered oils and strategic multi-metal gilding, this work invites collectors to pause, breathe deeply, and embrace the spirit of shared celebration — the gathering of light, community, and possibility that defines both spring and hanami itself.
Artwork Details
Artwork is an original mixed media, oil, acrylic and metal leaf painting created on a 1.5” deep gallery wood panel. The solid wood surface provides a smooth, stable foundation that enhances the layered color fields and luminous gilded accents.
The edges are finished in genuine gold leaf, creating a radiant halo effect around the piece and allowing it to feel complete and sculptural when displayed unframed.
The artwork is titled and signed on the back and will arrive professionally wired and ready to hang.
