Inside the Studio

Each painting begins with layered color fields and hand-applied metal leaf. Gold, silver, and copper surfaces shift with light, creating a shared luminosity between subjects.

How Metal Leaf Found Its Way Into My World

For over a decade, metallic paint was my favorite medium, until Syros watercolors and fragile metal leaf changed everything. From a messy first copper attempt still hanging unfinished on my wall to letting the shine become the subject itself, this is the story of how gold, silver, and copper deepened my exploration of animals, architecture, and belonging. Tiffany Zen is a Kansas City–based artist whose work explores connection between humans, animals, and the spaces they inhabit. Working in oil and hand-applied metal leaf, she creates intimate figurative paintings that shift with light and presence. With a background in architecture and design, her practice bridges structure and softness, permanence and relationship.
